We are getting involved!
A warm early autumn day, the sun is shining, the female bus driver takes everyone who’s is going to the demonstration ride for free and when getting off the bus we already hear choruses shouting slogans – an ideal start for the largest demonstration in Pittsburgh since the Vietnam war, which ends peacefully early in the evening. Around ten-thousand people came to the university in Oakland and joint the trek to Downtown, to the vicinity of the convention centre, where at the same the G20 were meeting. With hundreds of self-made placards and with well rehearsed and very creative choruses they demanded from the heads of states to abandon their neoliberal agenda.
“Money for jobs and education/ not for war and occupation!” and “Healthcare/ not warfare!” can be heard, „A Job is a Right“ and „Bail out people – not banks! Disarm financial markets!” can be read- Our small fine Attac-“block” is easily seen, we distribute information materials. Many spectators are lining the street and are cheering us on. Grievances are named, anger is aired, change is demanded. Filming and picture taking everywhere, singing, making music and dancing all around. A truly colourful protest, among which peacefully the colour black mixes.
During the final manifestation again many different groups speak out, short, concise speeches are summarizing our accusations, suggestions and demands. There is music, the ground is painted, people are exchanging opinions. Discussions are going on, horizons are expanded, the sense of being powerless is overcome. The multitude of our concerns unites into a single conclusion: We will not allow politics to run rod shod over us – we are getting involved!
