Protest Nisches
I walked through Pittsburgh, starting from my base camp, the small town of tents “on the hill”. Sniffed a lot of exhaust fumes, found broken houses and large bill boards. And finally some other places where already today protest preparations can be seen.
Curious people have to search long to find out about events ahead of the main action. The daily “Pittsburgh Post-Gazette” comments about the situation: "It is very hard to keep track of all of the protests planned around the G20. It would help if the anarchists were much better organized, and with a bigger marketing budget." So – maybe it will turn out to be a strong point of the protest that everything here is a bit confussed.
The police has some trouble coping with all. Yesterday the officers had to admit that they have not read the conditions for the two larger demonstrations (the “March for Jobs” and a demonstration with the motto “G 6 Billion Journey & Witness”) and were blocking the demonstrations longer than they were allowed.
Workshops and cultural events are part of the programme of the Climate-Convergence activists. But a big camp planned in the Schenley-Park was prohibited by the police. Now you can meet them only during day time on the “Overlook”, the park’s highest point.
This little open space on the gigantic campus of the Carnegie Mellon University is called “Art Space”. For one week already a small number of students is building a libertarian meeting place. I got Vegan food and internet access for free and learned about more construction and painting plans for the meeting point, where also small workshops will be conducted. Because of current drizzling rain most of the flyers are covered with plastic sheets, but rush hours are only expected from Wednesday onwards. Most of the other students don’t care about the project, they are rushing from one university-activity to the next. But every now and then some come looking and would like to know, what it is all about and what is planned additionally. Beyond the little hut seen on the picture are the small tents of the core group of the ”Art-Space”.
