Street Pedagogy -About useless competition-Sinnlose Konkurrenz-Concurrence sans raison
Hello!---We live in a difficult world of frantic productivism. Competitiveness is the rule. ---Would you like to play and find a better way to live together?---In the attached picture, you see something like a round map with territories delineated by white dotted lines. Attac Pays d'Aix proposes to people in the street to play for a moment with that beautiful and strange device.---Three volunteering players will pretend to be important negociators. They would care only for their own territory, and try to attract a golden ball meant to represent : capital investment, full employment... 1st round---My turn...I lower my handle to reduce the "cost of labour" in my territory. The map being inflated like a globe, the golden ball cannot remain on the top and rolls down to my side. I then comment to the next player : hey ...Don't you miss investment, employment inyou territory, no chance for you to be re-elected ??? Do something! ---In turn my neighbour will lower even more the cost of labour in his/her territory, and next one will do same...here we go all of us in an endless downwards spiral.--- Our Attac activists comment loudly the news : cheaper cars in Central Europa ...! Competitive call centers in Marocco...! matching the headlines with the position of the ball on the European map, so that sounds after all like our real world.--- The three players now bend to the ground, painfully, because of such lowest costs of labour, actually : miserable salaries. 2nd round---The players are given a second chance! They are allowed to stand up again, the ball is set right on the top of the globe, where the territories intersect. We encourage them to look for the "common interest" and they soon notice that a tiny rubber band is pasted around the center, and this is really a nice point of common interest because there is employment for everybody there. ---Provided that everybody plays fair, it is even possible to raise the whole thing, but only in harmony and progressively. Look : dignity is achieved, our arams are straight up! Thanks to -for example- a minimum salary enforced across Europe, progressively increased and harmonized. All of us now, we support another view about Europe, or the World, a world of cooperation and harmony.3nd round... We remove the rubber band meant to represent this very kind of politic rule able to retain, refrain from free competition. Will it now be possible to cooperate again ?---Las, it is now strictly impossible to keep the ball in the nice spot, and we are compelled to fight against eachother in the deadly spiral of competition. So, struggle for life exists in the jungle, for sure. But Mankind is capable of cooperation, solidarity, and can devise, elaborate such rules that allow people to cooperate. ---Minimum wages across Europe, across such a significant economic zone, wages progressively increased and harmonized, would provide conditions to foster sound exchanges. We could all live in a world of cooperation instead of competing alone against all others, day and night. The European Treaty, it seems, banned such harmonisation of rules and taxes, and forced people to fight against eachother. Freedom, fraternity YES. Free competition=NO.This is a much simplified game, but when you play the action, it gives you the feeling. I hope you can view the pictures.Gilles
