Dear Activists,
Please find enclosed a picture of the so-called HARICOTRON street pedagogy device.
The name mimics the SYNCHROTRON scientific machine, inviting to some kind of experiment.
This device is intended to introduce people in the street to the GATS negociations for free trade, where anything is to become something to sell (une marchandise).
On a saturday morning you cannnot attract people with such thema. They would not listen to you, nor take a paper.
Then, just give them a BEAN, a tiny bean in their hand.... They would not drop it, want to give it back to you.
Then make a side step and invite the person to drop the tiny bean in the Haricotron box labelled "I don't bother".
Just before person gets rid of the bean, notify that there are two other boxes "Yes" or "Not", a wiser choice. Why ? Because "I don't bother" sits in the middle of a Scale, while Yes and No sit at the extreme ends of the scale, and are very likely to produce a result....See next message for the end of the text

But "Yes" or "No" what does that exacltly mean ? Notice that the person is somewhat startled looking at the device, puts his/her basket loaded with market vegetables on the ground. That is a ifirst victory, because this person has now a free mind and really listen to you.
Looking through the texts on the HARICOTRON Panel, you can explain what the GATS agreement would mean for Health, Education, Pensions, Agriculture.
It is a nice map for an introduction to Free Trade disasters and alternative solutions.Do it the way you prefer.
The insurrections grows in the mind as you speak. The person will forcefull drop the Bean into the NO TO GATS box. That is a second symbolic victory.
Invite him/her to the next upcoming Attac meeting !
There may be such question : "I dropped my bean, and look, nothong happened ? "
The answer is "That is normal. A citizen will has little weight. We need to come in large numbers to make things really change. We should both of us call the next person to try the Haricotron ?".
At the end of the day, if the NO TO GATS box is full, it is worth sending it to an elected person (Mayor of the town) to inform about what citizens in the street wanted to voice collectively.
